Eternal Security – Biblical Fact or Fiction?

As a pastor, one of the profound truths I often encounter is the concept of eternal security – a concept that makes many wonder, is it a biblical fact or mere fiction? Through the lens of the Holy Scripture, I am firmly persuaded that it is indeed a biblical reality.

Whenever individuals come into the knowing embrace of Christ as their Savior, they enter into a divine relationship with God, which unequivocally guarantees their eternal security. In Jude 24, it is clear that “To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy”. This means that the believer’s freedom from falling is not by their power, but by God’s might. It is not left to us to stand before His glorious presence but rests on Him to present us faultlessly. Therefore, our eternal security is not based on us preserving our own salvation but a gift bestowed on us by God’s sheer power and grace.

Further echoing this paradigm is the redemptive proclamation of our Lord Jesus Christ who said, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29b). The believer is firmly held by both Jesus and the Father – an unbreakable bond that no one or nothing can dissolve. Who indeed can separate us from the robust grip of both the Father and the Son?

The Scripture in Ephesians 4:30 assures us that believers are “sealed for the day of redemption”. If believers were not provided eternal security, this sealing would not be genuinely until the day of redemption but limited until the day of sinning, apostasy, or disbelief. However, John 3:15-16 reinforces that whoever believes in Jesus Christ will “have eternal life”. Promising a person eternal life only to take it away makes the promise not “eternal”. The promises of everlasting life in the Bible would be inaccurate if eternal security were untrue.

Perhaps the most potent argument favoring eternal security is encapsulated in Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Our eternal security is rooted in God’s limitless love for those He has redeemed. It’s a divine assurance purchased by Christ, vowed by the Father, and sealed by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, dear friends, be comforted that in Christ lies our eternal security, a biblical fact, and not fiction.
