The Struggle of Watching Television as a Christian
As a man of God, I, often grapple with the issue of watching television. It’s a common struggle amongst us Christians, to determine if we should watch TV and, if we do, how much is appropriate. Like several other modern diversions, television wields the power for both significant benefit and considerable harm.
The Positive Impact of Television
To begin with, television can serve as an incredible educational instrument. It has proven to be a lifesaver through news and weather updates. We Christians can also enjoy access to entertainment, sports, and beneficial information. Praise the Lord, our gospel has reached every corner of the globe through television (Matthew 28:19), and it has transformed countless lives through Christian-based broadcasts.
The Downside of Television
On the other hand, television can also be a pitfall. Many lose themselves in excessive consumption or get aimlessly drawn to whatever programs are airing, detracting them from family, friends, and precious moments of studying God’s Word. Alarmingly, a vast number of today’s popular shows glorify the vilest qualities of mankind, often portraying evil as good (2 Timothy 3:1–5; Isaiah 5:20). Even amongst those who profess godliness on television, a few are more focused on gaining wealth and renown than saving souls (2 Timothy 4:3–4).
Discerning Use of Television as Christians
Nevertheless, the role of television in our lives hinges on how we interact with it. The idea is not to let television reign over us; instead, we should harness it as a communication tool. If you desire to navigate the world of television as a Christian, you might want to consider these questions and answer them prayerfully:
- What draws me to this TV show? (Consult 1 Corinthians 10:31.)
- Does this show contain anything that taints my Christian purity? (See Psalm 101:3.)
- Does this show enhance my understanding of the culture, aiding better communication of Christ, or does it entice me towards voyeuristic pleasure in scenes of evil?
- Do I prioritize deriving the truth from God’s Word over powerful media like television?
- Can I discern the good and reject the evil in the shows I watch? Or does the evil overshadow the good they might hold?
- Could the time I spend on this be better used elsewhere?
Each Christian must make the personal choice of whether to watch television and the extent of its consumption. This decision is usually guided by their personal relationship with God. In the case of younger ones, their parents in consultation with God make this decision. As Christians, we must meditate on God’s Word, pray about our choices, heed our conscience, and follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
Guiding Scripture on Television Viewing as a Christian
The Bible provides guidance on discerning appropriate television consumption. Here are some scriptures that might help:
- Matthew 5:28
- Matthew 6:22–23
- Romans 12:2
- Romans 13:13–14
- Philippians 4:8
- 1 Thessalonians 5:21–22
These verses enlighten us on how to conduct ourselves suitably in Christ, even as we partake in the world’s offerings, like television.
