It might seem puzzling to reconcile the idea of a loving God with the reality of God’s hatred. Yet, the Bible clearly teaches both: God is love (1 John 4:8), and God hates (Hosea 9:15). This dual nature is not contradictory but reflects His perfect character.
What Does God Hate?
God’s hatred is directed toward sin and wickedness because they are contrary to His holy nature. Among the things God hates are:
- Idolatry (Deuteronomy 12:31).
- Child sacrifice and sexual immorality (Leviticus 20:1–23).
- Lying, pride, murder, and evil plotting (Proverbs 6:16–19).
These sins harm His creation and defy His will. God’s hatred of sin includes judgment on sinners because sin cannot be separated from those who commit it (Psalm 5:5).
God’s Love for Humanity
Despite His hatred of sin, God’s love for people remains constant. John 3:16 reveals, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.” Even while we were sinners, God demonstrated His love through Christ’s sacrifice (Romans 5:8).
God desires that all people turn from sin and find life in Him (2 Peter 3:9). However, for those who persist in rebellion, His judgment remains, reflecting His holy justice.
How Can God Love and Hate at the Same Time?
Unlike us, God can love and hate perfectly without contradiction. His hatred is never sinful or malicious but stems from His holiness. God’s love seeks the best for His creation, while His hatred opposes everything that destroys or corrupts it.
For example, God hated the sins of Nineveh but lovingly sent Jonah to call the people to repentance (Jonah 3). Those who responded experienced His mercy and forgiveness.
The Choice: Love or Judgment
Psalm 5 and Psalm 11 highlight two groups of people:
- The Righteous: Those who take refuge in God and seek His ways will experience His love and joy.
- The Wicked: Those who persist in sin and reject God’s grace will face His judgment and hatred for their rebellion.
The ultimate choice rests with us. God’s love is offered to all through Jesus Christ, but those who refuse His gift remain under judgment.
God’s Desire for You
God’s hatred of sin does not diminish His love for you. He desires repentance and salvation for everyone (Ezekiel 18:32). Through Christ, anyone can move from being an enemy of God to becoming a beloved child of God (Colossians 1:13).
As believers, let us reflect God’s love and pursue holiness, turning away from sin and encouraging others to embrace the grace of Christ.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Let us respond to His love and share it with the world.
