Key to a Victorious Christian Life – What You Need to Know

As a priest, I am often asked about the keys to a victorious Christian life. The answer is rooted and grounded firmly in one word: faith. A victorious Christian life is lived by faith, surrendering every moment to God. This truth is emphasized clearly in the biblical chapter Hebrews 11 which is rich with stories of men and women who lived victoriously by faith. Our God is invariably victorious. As Jesus proclaimed in his final week on this earth, even the cross was not a defeat for the Lord but a victory (Mark 14:62). This is the victory that we, as believers, share in.

Living a victorious Christian life means triumphing over “everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 John 2:16). It’s about experiencing God’s peace (John 14:27; 16:33) and perseverance in the face of hardship (Romans 8:35). Such a life leads to the defeat of death itself (1 Corinthians 15:54–55) and a promise of glorious rewards in heaven (Revelation 21:7).

A victorious Christian life hinges on faith. As stated in Romans 1:17, “The righteous will live by faith”. This is a concept that is impossible to overemphasize: “Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4-5).

Another essential component of this life is the right approach to temptation. The Bible reassures us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that God will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. He will always provide a way out of it. The choice still remains with the individual if they take the escape route or not. Avoiding sin requires constant submission to God.

The theme of victory continues in John 15 where Jesus explains that he is the vine and we are the branches. This conveys the crucial idea of “abiding” or “remaining” in Christ (Ephesians 2:13). This victorious life is not just about eternal salvation; it involves daily faith-based decisions that reflects Christ in our lives (Galatians 2:20).

Living the victorious Christian life implies setting your eyes on heavenly things and not getting swayed by worldly pleasures. Jesus is our perfect example here. “For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God”, so that we can follow him and not lose heart (Hebrews 12:2–3). The eternal security of believers is intrinsic to our faith — we are secured at God’s right hand by faith. Hence, a victorious Christian is one who lives in this reality of eternal security in Christ.
