In today’s world, it’s easy to lose sight of spiritual truth amid all the distractions. But as Christians, we need to stay vigilant because, as it says in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Yes, the devil is always on the lookout for opportunities to get a foothold in our lives. Here are some behaviors that can open doors to darkness—and how to turn back to God instead.
Living in Unrepentant Sin
When we knowingly sin and don’t turn back, we’re putting ourselves in spiritual danger. Unrepentant sin can become like chains that bind us. It could be anger, envy, greed, or anything we justify without asking God for forgiveness. When we refuse to repent, the devil takes that as an invitation to influence us more deeply. James 4:7 reminds us, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Opening Ourselves to Occult Practices
Many people think of occult practices as harmless curiosity, but they are a dangerous spiritual gateway. Engaging with things like tarot cards, Ouija boards, astrology, or other occult practices invites darkness into our lives. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 tells us that God detests these practices. We don’t need spiritual insight from these sources when we have the Holy Spirit, our guide into all truth.
Allowing Unforgiveness and Bitterness to Take Root
When we hold onto grudges, we let bitterness take root in our hearts. Ephesians 4:26-27 warns us not to let anger fester because it gives the devil a foothold. Forgiving isn’t easy, but it’s freeing. Jesus forgave us fully on the cross, so we are called to forgive others.
Worshiping Materialism and Worldly Desires
Our society teaches us to value wealth, success, and popularity above all else. When we put these things before God, we’re essentially worshiping idols. Jesus said in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve both God and money.” When we love the world too much, we start drifting away from God, leaving room for negative influences to enter our lives.
Refusing to Be in Fellowship with Other Believers
Isolation is one of the devil’s greatest weapons. When we are alone, we are more vulnerable. Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us to gather together and encourage each other. Staying connected to the church and godly friends strengthens our spiritual defenses. When we’re together, we build each other up, helping to ward off the devil’s schemes.
Neglecting Prayer and the Word of God
Prayer and the Word are our spiritual armor. Ephesians 6:11-18 describes the “armor of God” and reminds us that prayer is our direct line to the Father. When we neglect these, we leave ourselves exposed and spiritually weak, making it easier for the devil to influence us. Just like a soldier needs armor, we need these spiritual tools to stay protected.
Final Thoughts: Walk in the Light of Christ
The good news is that we don’t need to live in fear. Jesus has already conquered the darkness, and His victory is our assurance. When we recognize areas in our lives that may be vulnerable, we can pray, repent, and turn back to Him. With faith in Christ, we are safe in God’s hands. James 4:8 encourages us, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” Walk in the light, guard your heart, and let the power of Christ keep you free from the enemy’s grasp.
Stay vigilant, stay prayerful, and stay close to God.
